Government investment in hospital and school projects over the last decade has been substantial. This investment, combined with creative funding such as PPP contracts and corporate sponsorship of Academies has been the catalyst for a next generation of building design for centres of learning and well being. The Commission for the Built Environment (CABE) manifestoes defining best practice, encouraging creativity and rewarding excellence in the design of public buildings for these purposes. Recent designs have featured creative use of colour, sound and glazing for aesthetic effect and documented as bringing about a positive contribution to the experience of users.
The use of specialist architectural glass in contemporary healthcare and learning environment building design enabling visionary architects and interior designers to provide true innovation. The Classrooms of the Future initiative being a very good example of how children can become involved and connect with the fabric of their community. The use of printed, curved and safety glass in these projects often allowing spaces to be 'opened up' and flexible and of course light and airy - bringing the outside in.
